Frequently Asked Questions

This page will only be meaningful to you if you are creating your own website on my server or maintaining domain names pointing at it. I believe this page should cover almost any initial questions, my goal is to set out as simple a service as possible.

What can I use to upload my website?

You need an SFTP client so Filezilla, WinSCP or the client built in to Dreamweaver or Coda or any other software that supports SFTP (port 22).

How do I upload my website?

Point your client at wpinc.eu using the username and password supplied to you when I made your account. Do not forget to use SFTP (port 22) to connect otherwise it will not work.

How do I point my domain at your hosting server?

Firstly note that I do not have my own nameservers, I find the 123-reg ones to be more than capable. If you need alternate nameservers, I suggest you check out afraid.org for a free alternative.

I recommend 123-reg but whatever you use, you will need to set the root of your domain to 184.106.155.18. I recommend the following settings for 123-reg (screenshot of 123-reg DNS Management page):

Obviously replace willpoweredinc.net. with your own domain name and remember that other providers will look different. I recommend the use of an * because that acts as a wildcard and points all unspecified subdomains to my server which then loads a "WTFD" page (acting as a 404 page) pointing them to your website.

Why is my .htaccess file not having any effect?

Lighttpd, the web server software I use, does not support .htaccess files. I will quite happily activate any redirect or rewrite rules you need or configure your virtual host as you need it.
